What better way to celebrate the arrival of autumn than by some good old-fashioned beading? At least, that’s what the Harmony Arts Board thought. On Saturday, September 23rd, they sponsored a “Fall for Harmony” beading event with the FCHS Falcon Cheerleaders. Five of Fillmore Central’s very own volunteered to help assist the event. The volunteers were as follows: Eva Hemenway (senior), Siri Corson (senior), Kyra Arndt (senior), Bobbi Nelson (sophomore), and Gracie Whalen (seventh grader).
Starting at 10 am, people of all ages were welcomed into the Harmony Visitor Center where they could create their very own beaded project. Funds from the Harmony Arts Board and a large donation by a local community member supplied the beads and elastics for the event. While bracelets were the most popular undertaking, guests made anything from rings to cat collars. As Eva Hemenway, student member of the board stated, “Our goal is to introduce the arts to people of all ages in our community.” This event definitely accomplished that goal!
This certainly isn’t the first event the Harmony Arts Board has sponsored. In the past, they’ve sponsored events such as poetry slams, singing events at the restaurant Estelle’s, and a concert called Back Alley Jams. An ongoing project of theirs is the Harmony Postcard Contest. Last May, this contest took submissions from local artists, and three of these designs were selected to be put into print. These postcards are available at several local businesses in Harmony for only a dollar. Coming up, they plan on sponsoring a Christmas light contest for Harmony families.
