On October 7, 1916, the highest scoring game in college football history took place. Georgia Tech completely shut down Cumberland University 222-0. This game’s score remains a legendary record. Unbelievably, Cumberland wasn’t able score a single point. It was a complete mismatch between the two teams.
When the first quarter ended the score was 63-0, and at half time the score was 126-0. However, Georgia Tech didn’t back down. Their coach, John Heisman, encouraged his team to keep playing hard to avoid the possibility of Cumberland catching up. Obviously that wasn’t really necessary. The last two quarters were even shortened to 12 minutes instead of 15 minutes. This game will be remembered as one of the most one-sided contests in sports history.
