Although Columbus day was celebrated on October 9 this year, since it was the second Monday in October, Columbus reached the New World on October 12, 1492. Sponsored by Spain, Christopher Columbus, an Italian explorer, set sail across the Atlantic Ocean in search of the New World. Then on October 12, he spotted and went ashore a Bahamian island and claimed it for Spain.
There is a lot of controversy with Columbus Day, especially with it now also being Indigenous People’s Day. But nevertheless, it was a great accomplishment at the time, even though this area of the world had already been inhabited. At the time, Columbus thought he had landed in a different region of the world, but he still managed to make a huge discovery. It can be agreed upon though that Christopher Columbus wasn’t the best person, and that he did some questionable things in his time. However, even today we still acknowledge what he did and take a day to recognize the expedition to the New World.
