The Grinch

Dr. Seuss’ “How The Grinch Stole Christmas” is ultimately one of the top Christmas movies that we think of around this time of year. It tells the story of the green, mean, and Christmas-hating Grinch who is said to have a heart two sizes too small. He then, with the help of his dog Max, tries to keep Christmas from coming by stealing it from the town of Whoville. Eventually, with help from the Who’s and Cindy-Lou Who, he learns the true meaning of Christmas and has a change of heart.

The Grinch first appeared in a 33-line illustrated poem and then later in his own book. It is said that Dr. Seuss had gotten the idea for the Grinch from himself after looking in the mirror and noticing a Grinchish expression on his face. He then decided to turn it into a fun, rhyming children’s book that would be loved by a lot of people. Since then, the Grinch has been made into several film adaptations. First there was the classic 1966 version, which was a fun cartoon short that first introduced the song “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” and showcased Boris Karloff as both the Grinch and the narrator. Next, the 2000 live action film, starring Jim Carrey, came out and became quite popular. Then of course there is the most recent 2018 animated version with the voice of the Grinch being Benedict Cumberbatch.

I feel like the Grinch has become such a popular and notorious character. He’s helped teach us to not be a Grinch around the holidays, and he taught us the true meaning of Christmas by showing us that “Maybe Christmas doesn’t come from a store. Maybe Christmas …perhaps… means a little bit more.” So as Christmas nears, and we rewatch the classics, what is your favorite version of the Grinch?
